Though few concrete facts are available about this limited run of graphics, here's what is generally accepted to be fact: In 1979, Mickey Thompson introduced the 'Thunder-bowl' off-road stadium race. Tons of celebrities were invited to this brand new racing spectacle. AMC entered the event with 4 very similar CJ-7 Jeeps, all wearing nine stars on the hood. To commemorate the event in 1981, AMC introduced the same decal and called it the CJ Superstar package.
Each CJ Superstar is believed to bear a unique and identifiable number. Although definite production numbers are not available, less than 300 of the CJ Superstars were believed to be produced.
